Title: Celeriac
Post by: mrswashi on August 21, 2013, 05:58
After being given 5 tiny celeriac shoots by a girl at work back in May ish, they are now doing really well with lots of greenery.....
Anyone know when they are likely to be ready to pick?
 :D

Celeriac is usually harvested from Autumn onwards. At this time in the year the outer leaves should be ideally cut off right back to the base, leaving about five or six leaves as a tuft in the middle. As new leaves then grow, older ones are cut off again.

This is to encourage the base to swell.

Water every other day, liquid food twice weekly and they will be good to eat  :D

Hope that helps  :)

It might be a bit late this year for the roots to size up but now you know what to do for next year. And yes, it really does help.

They haven't got that big this year as it has been a struggle to keep them in water and food this dry weather, but Mrs G has forbidden me to take any yet, as there's so much else around!

Somewhere else on the forum, it was mentioned that smaller roots have a more intense flavour, and I can vouch for that!

You'll notice the difference as soon as you've taken off all those outer leaves!

Really? Even though there is a few months growing time left....

Oh good. Mine are only the size of small apples at the moment :( I can't get down to the allotment much during the week so perhaps celeriac will not be such a good crop for me to grow next year :(

Me too - because of space issues mine only went in this month, so I'm not hoping for huge things, but more than a golf-ball would be nice.

I pull the leaves off rather than cut. Watch out for small side shoot round the bottom and remove them as deep as you can.

I just tug the leaves hard and fast sideways, which takes the stem off tight to the bulb. Very generous amounts of manure were added last winter, BFB was raked in before planting out and they have had no feed since. They have only been watered when it was really hot and dry. Two varietys, Ilona F1 and Giant Prague. The f1 plants are much better looking and very uniform, all of these are bigger than a cricket ball now and looking good, the others are smaller. Had none bolt this year either

Are they ready 'bolters', Totty?

So far, we're still at the five stalks stage, but no flower stems to see at all - yet...

I've seen no signs of bolting either - fingers crossed!
Mine are between golf ball and tennis ball sized and I did the leaf thing too. :)

I have given up on my swede - I will let them to continue to grow out of interest but they are not fattening up at all -- just a long thickish root :s
