Paraffin heaters question
« on: September 24, 2008, 16:00 »
I have a small paraffin heater in my greenhouse and it smells.  Will this affect the taste of my plants?  Have to guess that it won't otherwise people wouldn't use them.

Answers on a fifty quid note and send to......

Slightly different, but I cook when camping on an old paraffin cooker. Food tastes great and never of paraffin.

Food always tastes better when you cook it outside. :)

It's brand new.  Maybe I have the flame too high.

Hi, I use kerosene in my heater it never smell and its half the price of paraffin. if you look around locally you might find a garage that sells it straight from the pump.

No smoke now it's on as low as it will go.

I'll look out for kerosine as I always like to save money.  Is it as safe to use as paraffin?

If the wick is too low so that it's not burning all the way round/across it will smell, as well as if it's too high. Also if it's got crusty or uneven, in which case it will need trimming. A well tended, decent quality heater with decent quality wick will not smell. If after all the above it still smells, I suggest you get a better heater. Regardless of whether the plants will be affected you don't want to be breathing fumes.

If it's a 'primus' type then as penance says, the jet probably needs cleaning.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Thanks for that woodburner.  I am a novice at paraffin heaters so some tweaking will be necessary.
