Looking to get an apple tree
« on: June 21, 2009, 21:30 »
Hi all

I am definately getiing this GYO bug and am thinking of getting rid of a garden tree and replacing it with a useful tree, i.e. one that gives me something to eat!.

Space is very limited, initially we wanted rid of the affending tree to make more floor space so now after a little persuading we are thinking we might be able to get an espalier tree, to grow against the fence.  Apple i was hoping.  I do a lot of home cooking so like the idea of Bramley but after doing a bit of reading i understand that i would need two other trees nearby for a bramley, so anyway, i guess my question is:

Where can i find out about the different types of espalier?, I was hoping to get a "family" tree ( one that has 2 or 3 different apple varieties).  I am struggling to find any information or to be able to purchase one.

I dont have much faith in my local Garden centres so would therefore rather do research at home then go out to buy something specific.

Any comments appreciated.

You could try Ken Muir's website --- very informative IMHO  :D

If you are looking for Apple Trees take a look at http://www.ashridgetrees.co.uk/SHOPPING-CATEGORIES/Apple-Trees-Fruit-Trees. Good range, all their fruit trees are guaranteed and they do a lot of them as half-standards, cordons, bushes (which all get you there quicker) as well as maidens like every one else.

Good luck
Good luck

Hi, i think a family tree is a good idea if you only want one tree because they polinate themselves.

If you go for a family tree DON`T go with one having Bramley on it. Bramleys are so vigorous they take over the plant.

Few questions:
How big is the plot you are thinking of putting the tree in.
How big a tree(s) do you want.
How big a crop do you expect.

Rootstocks:
M27 gets to about 6 ft,
M9 gets to about 8 ft,
M26 gets to about 10 ft.

Triploids are vigorous and the pollination of them and others make them a pain. Bramley's are triploids so as said do not get that on a family tree.

As you are in Essex I also suggest that you look at the Ken Muir site as they have information and are in Essex.
