Any ideas on getting rid of brambles without using poisons?

Cut the tops off so you can get in.
leaving a good 2 foot to pull at then get a fork under then pull out.

And once oyu have them out, it woudl make sense to cover the ground with black plastic/cardboard etc - the roots that are left in the ground (and there are always some) will regrow and the young plants need to be smothered....
