Cordon pear tree - help needed
« on: September 21, 2017, 08:38 »
The leaves on the top half of this cordon pear tree have suddenly blackened, but the fruit is unaffected. Does anyone know what causes this, and what to do/whether it will recover?  I'm wondering whether it's scab(from the adjacent apple), fireblight, or even sudden oak death?

Thank you,

My money would be on frost / wind damage, especially if it happened overnight all of a sudden. Fireblight is unlikely, give the branches a quick check as you'd see it there.

Thanks Lard, I've just been out and checked the branches and they look ok. Not had frost here, but there have been gales; we were away at the time, so I hadn't thought about it being wind damage. If that's what it is, the tree will hopefully be fine next year.
