What are you growing too much of?
« on: July 08, 2017, 21:21 »
My list is quite long:
18 tomato plants when 6 would suffice.
About 70 celeriac. They all germinated and I planted them all out. At least son and daughter and their families like them - or did last year.
3 Cucumber plants, we don't even like them. Growing them for the challenge
5 blackcurrant bushes. One or at the most two would suffice
50 sweetcorn in polytunnel. This was against my better judgement but wife persuaded me that Grandchildren would make short work of them
3 courgette plants. We never learn, do we? Great when young but a blessed liability once they get to prize marrow size

If they all grow to a decent size then kale.
Loads germinated and couldn't possibly throw them away so planted about 18 small plants today  ;)
Love kale but not sure if it's possible to eat such a lot  ;)
Most other plants that have quite a lot of are either small or seeds that are only just germinating but if they all get to a good size then most things are freezable.
As usual I am just glad when anything grows  :D

It is like the old joke about the young wag that goes into a chippy just before closing.

"Got any chips left mate?"

"Yes, plenty"

"You should not have cooked so many"

Lots of us are guilty of sowing extra seeds "juts in case" and in my case it is chillies... 20 plants set in a row in the tunnel, another few dotted around here and there, a few in the greenhouse at home in pots.

How many chillies can we eat, even allowing for extended family and friends?????????????

Got about 100 onions with another 100 on the way. Memory lapse when ordering!

Potatoes.

Blackcurrants enough to fill a paddling pool.

Only six sweet corn plants though...

Gooseberries, it's only me that likes them.  They were already on the plot when we got it and when we left the plot we dug them up and took them home.  I haven't eaten last years yet from out the freezer.  :(

Probably tomatoes (33 v the usual 16, although we do eat a lot during the summer and freeze plenty for use over the winter) and chillies/peppers (50 or so, but again we do get through rather a lot in sauces, pickles and chutneys). I managed to get some Orange Habaneros (100000+ shu) mixed up with Suave Oranges (800 shu) the other night - it made the salad somewhat interesting  ::)

I've seen dried ones made into a Christmas wreath 😊

Yup! We had two this year, one hanging on each of the big windows in the kitchen... they looked fabulous, especially the huge red ones. Got a bit faded eventually so down they came and they are beyond making into chilli flakes (which was the original plan) so I can start this year's harvest from fresh

I have become more disciplined as time has gone on  ???

However, the only real possible "I may of grown too much" is sweetcorn.

And the only real "I have far too much" is eggs, my egg plants are producing 4 eggs a day

Dandelions
Nettles
Bindweed
Creeping Buttercup
Brambles
In terms of actual edible stuff, I seem to have judged quite well so far, no sign of any upcoming gluts yet.
