While we have had our apple trees I've been pruning them during the winter months, but recently I've stood back and had a good look at them.  My gentle pruning has been too gentle and the trees have become far too large.

How do I go about a severe prune, or major cut back of these trees?

I've only got one apple tree Tony, but when Brian prunes it for me, he always takes the middle branches out as well as cutting down the outside ones.  He says it lets the air circulate better.

I'm not sure how he does the outside ones though.  Apart from any branches that have grown crossing over others he takes out.
