My Phalaenopsis orchids have stopped flowering and are producing new leaves from where I would expect but they are also producing new leaves from the roots. I have not seen this before but I havent been growing orchids for long.

Does this 'alternative' leaf growth have any significance and what should I do?

They have recently had a bit of a hard time as my father in laws was looking after them and put them in his conservatory in full sun causing some leaf scorching but they are back with me now and have perked up considerably.

Are the new leaves growing from an old flowering stem rather than the roots, a bit like this?

If so, they are called keiki and are normal. You can leave them to grow and with regular feeding your plant should flower again happily. I find spraying dilute plant food onto the exposed roots and leaves more effective than watering it in. My brother uses Baby Bio and it works well. I was given some specialist feed,but it is no better (good, but not better lol)

No they are growing from beneath the potting mix, so from below the existing leaves.

It is a separate new plant then. I would leave it to grow as it will eventually flower. Sounds nice!
