Homemade soil test
« on: March 25, 2013, 08:48 »
I've remembered that I need to test the soil for ph but don't want to spend out on a kit. My friend passed on this tip and am going to try it....

Put a little damp soil into 2 cups. Add baking soda to 1 of them and vinegar to the other. If the baking soda makes the soil bubbly the soil is acidic (below 7ph). If the vinegar makes the soil bubbly it's alkaline (above 7ph). If no reaction from either then it's a neutral soil.
Motherhood - when being spontaneous takes 2 and a half days of careful planning

yes but this is only a general indication. It will not tell you how acid or alkali the soil is.

from about ph of 6 to 8 you will get hardly any reaction at all and any bits of free chalk would react with vinegar even if soil is generally acid anyway. Dry baking soda is unlikely to react with soil that is only damp.
In my humble opinion you are probably not going to get a meaningful result from a single sample in any case.
Just my opinion

Thanks guys. I'll give it a go and see what happens, I'm not after an exact reading, it's more curiosity and my friends always tell me things like this cos they know I'll try it and it saves them the hassle  ::)

:) didn't know that! Will have to give it ago and see what happens! not too bothered about properly testing my soil at the moment it's just a hobby after all and if the weeds can grow then I know it's reasonably fertile

It might be interesting to add vinegar to a little baking soda, use what you see as a judgement aid to the test.
