Been thinking about growing them for a couple of years, now is the time. I will get rid of the sweetcorn soon and the Raspberry's will go in after the bed is prepared.

Which raspberries will you grow? Summer or Autumn varieties?

After doing some reading on here I think I will be going for Autumn varieties. Although as I have never grown them before I am always open to listening to others with more experience.

I always recommend Joan J for Autumn fruiting - it carries on for ages :)

Joan J have certainly delivered the goods this year. They have been in 2 years so this is the first year of proper fruiting. Started in July, won 1st in local show, ate what is probably the last picking today. Big bold fruit and excellent flavour.

I'd also vote for autumn fruiting rasps. Phenomenal crop this year and still going and far more use at this time of year than mid summer when there's so much other fruit around.

Have to agree re the far more use at this time of year, my summer fruiting ones have died out & I don't think I'm going to replace them,plus the autumn ones I've got,forget variety, are bigger & better tasting fruits

It doesn't take much room to have 2 or 3 Summer canes to augment the Autumn ones I prefer, but always best to keep them well separate for pruning purposes if you can. As it happens, the Summer crop this year were as good as the Autumn, as my autumn raspberries, though hugely prolific, lost a couple of "flushes" this year to mould to what I guess must have been perfect wet and manky conditions on a couple of specific days in September, always a risk. The taste seemed to be just that little bit more tart than usual too.
I love raspberries, but I just wish they were as good to freeze as red and blackcurrants. They lose their structure easily, and don't even store for long when freshly picked. An awful lot of my big Autumn crops gets wasted in a way the Summer ones aren't.

I freeze loads of raspberries as mine are autumn ones and there is so much fruit, it is impossible to eat it all fresh. Frozen are fine for coulis, jam and setting into jellies. Raspberries from the freezer in midwinter are a treat :D
Raspberry vodka is also pretty good and I have made raspberry wine before now. Neither last long ;)

I tried to grow raspberries from bought canes without success.
a colleague dug some runners up for me and they have romped away.
don't know the variety but autumn cropping and big fruits.
they are prolific and I have planted another row.
excess frozen for pies or crumbles through out the winter.
