I've noticed that a couple of bindweed plants have popped up in my raised bed containing asparagus (planted last year). Given that I can't dig this stuff out, would it be possible to carefully spray the bindweed with something like Resolva (glyphosate/diquat) to see if that would do the trick? Don't want to see my poor spears strangled.

rather than spray so close to your asparagus, you could put rubber gloves on and dab the bindweed leaves with glyphosate using a sponge or paper towel. If you do this, please rinse the gloves well before you take them off.

You could try and unwind the bindweed, and slurp it with a dollop of Glypho - that should knock it on the head!
Can't have asparagus being usurped can we!

You're right, Growster. :D Tried the careful application of Resolva via a paper towel yesterday, so will see what happens. Was concerned that not enough of the nasty stuff was getting onto the bindweed leaves, but we'll see. May have to resort to some very gentle spraying if that hasn't worked.

My Mum had a lot of bindweed last year, but has a cat (Mr Thoms) and was concerned about using weedkiller. I stuffed as much of the plant as I could into sandwich bag, dabbed with weed killer and tied it off with an elastic band. It's a bit of a faff, but I have to say that it worked very well as it gave it time to be taken down to the main roots.... :)

Back to Rookie's bindweed - I've noticed a lot more in one particular place recently, and as we've kicked out a lot of stuff where it all grows, I can see some opportunities to clobber it all where it hurts, so your post is very timely!

Yes, they do need a fair amount of light to flower (which I don't have, I'm afraid). Still, I have another 5 to pass on now (and 3 more rooting).... :lol:
