Agapanthus in pots
« on: October 09, 2019, 11:52 »
I expect I have asked this before, but cannot find it.    I have two of these in pots/tubs and they are outside. What shall I do to over-winter them,   thanks.    Mrs Bouquet

I have 4 pots, but only bring the 2 terracotta pots into the greenhouse, mostly to keep the pots from flaking, but it is also insurance if the winter is a very cold one....

They've all come through the last 4 winters ok ;)

I could put mine in a very cool greenhouse or move them back beside the house, although they will get the cold winds there.      Do I water them at all ?   Will the leaves go brown, and if so shall I just lift them out when finished. (like a Daff)
Thanks,  Mrs B

Mine's a cold greenhouse, so yours should be fine :)
Some of the leaves die back (cut these off) but some stay green all though winter. I leave them in their pots and just put them back outside, and give them a feed, when it has warmed up. They don't have a bulb, just fleshy roots, so after a couple of years they need either a bigger pot, or splitting up and potting up separately.
I just water them when I remember, that means not very often  ::) I think they're better off on the dry-side when it's cold though. Cold and soggy isn't a good combination for most plants...
