4 hens 3 eggs
« on: May 24, 2010, 17:01 »
I have 4 hens that are about 25 weeks old we get 3 eggs nearly every day now, do you think they are all laying. Two are black rock and two are bovan gold so we get two different egg types. The reason I ask is one still has almost no comb and does not do the little dance when you try to pick her up. Can any one shed some light on this. Thank again.

If her comb hasn't developed yet then I would say she isn't laying  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Joyful sorry to ask but is this true of hybrids too. I have not read anywhere that the combs have to be big or about any dance. Please can you enlighten me .
many thanks

Hi Rachel, not all hens do the dance and now I have cockerels very few of mine do. However their combs should go red (not all combs are big though) but the reddness is a sure fire way of telling  :)

18 weeks is a bit early, although they are often sold as point of lay from 16 weeks and then people get dissapointed when they have to wait two months for eggs - I know when I got my first ones after two weeks of waiting I got so fed up with people asking me if they had laid yet ).

when they squat some will just stay down but others will jump from foot to foot whilst squatting  When you see one doing it you will know what I mean  ;)
