Title: Hens breaking eggs
Post by: Oakdalebirds on May 01, 2010, 06:50
Hi ........Can anything be done to stop my girls from breaking eggs !!
I shall explain .....I have a coop with three seperate nest boxes(external) and all the girls use the same one in which to lay however indoing so they smash one egg each time (not always the same egg, I have five girls all different so different egg colour that was if one was off lay i would be able to spot it quicker)
I can not put a sloping floor in the nest box for 1; I dont know how and 2; Dont think the floor can be as its a purpose built coop .
I did read some where that you can hang strips of black rubber flooring to make all nest boxes darker ?? would thius help or wopuld this just harbour nastie bugs ??

I have tried to collect the eggs as quick as i can but no always able as work full time.

Thanks to all that havew helped in the past :D :D :D :D :D

hello, have you thought about rollaway nest boxes - you can buy them from places like solway feeders (this is what Grannie Annie did), or off ebay, you can buy just the inserts and adapt your own nest boxes - which is what Karlooben did, or you can make your own as pictured on this link -

hope that helps  :)
