Probably weather related, but when you planted them out did you firm them in really really well?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well you're doing better than me. None of my caulis have got any heads at all.

Cauli's are notorious for not liking any 'stop' in their growth,so you have to ensure they never dry out,get too hot, don't get pot bound before transplanting. Then like others have said firm them in really well, keep watered & weed free.

think best thing to do is firm soil well when planting, when the curd develops water well (plenty of rain here) and cover curd up by folding the outside leaves to protect against sun.

think i had this happen once when it was really sunny, can't remember if soil was dry or not  but i hadn't covered them up with the outside leaves.

Since I have my hard and fast rules, I have had lots of caulis

1. Really really solid ground

2. Loadsa water

3.Plenty of chicken pellets

4. Cut them as soon as I can see the curd peeping out

5. Keep them netted against butterflies and pigeons

6. Don't grow All Year Round as they are not (DD told me that and he was soooo right): choose a decent variety right for the season ie overwintering or late summer cropping
