Tis not subsoil, its raised beds

More,...we had to dig right down for drainage purposes.  Was a real hassle, but paid off this year compared to last year. We  raised the side of two beds with planks on two and filled with topsoil and manure and compost etc

If that`s the case, assuming you are using them as DEEP beds, not raised beds. Plant the potatoes as deep as possible, whenever you like. There`s no need to earth up, either.

Ah DEEP, I stand corrected  :D

Thanks for that, will try next year. Though the earthing up may have helped this year, so Im going to add that on

People, on these sites think that beacause they use RAISED beds, they are improving their growing chances. Wrong, what they have to do is turn over  the soil in the bottom of the bed, THEN add fresh soil, to bring the level of the soil up to the top of the bed. Then, they can put the plants closer together, giving a bigger yield.

Ok I see your point in the raised vs deep terminology.  Though in my case it doesnt really make that much dfference as my original question was about frosts.  Raised vs deep can be confusing however, so its always a good idea to put all your growing info in any query
