Post by: mat whitlock on May 21, 2016, 11:41
Hi all

i popped up the allotment today just to check everything was looking good and i noticed my french dwarf bean plants have got brown leaves. well actually only this plant is that bad the rest just have small spots of brown.

i was wondering if any might know what could be causing it, have they got to hot and dry? the ground was still damp

Looks like a bit of sun damage to me - maybe following a shower?

It has a look to me of leaf miner damage, where a little larvae eats the leaf away between the upper and lower layers, have a look at pictures of e.g.  beet leaf miner. I think they will also eat spinach, not sure about French beans. Sometimes you can feel a little grub in the damaged area.

I agree with sun damage. Maybe you hurried to plant them out before the leaves were toughened up.

Bean plants can also be bruised by wind, but This looks like sun.

so if it is sun, would that mean they will not survive?

The new leaves look fine.  I'd just leave them to it.  :)

Looks to me like sun scorch, where water has been on the leaves and the sun has shone strongly. Keep an eye on them and make sure it isn't spreading. If you are watering, try to keep water off the leaves, not a lot you can do if it is rain drops. It is likely to happen with 'soft' leaves if the plants have been growing in a greenhouse or similar so as the plant hardens up outside it is less likely to be a problem.

The leaf won't recover but the plant has a fair chance.

thanks all

ive been checking and its not spread, i think it maybe because i watered it when it was very sunny out, lesson learned

its only that one plant so not to much harm done

cheers all
