I love apple mint for salads and desserts but I think the common mint is better for cooking with new potatoes. 

Just a couple of apple mint leaves, finely shredded, really lift coleslaw

Even the packet stuff might grow. Stick a few sprigs in a glass of water and see if they put out roots.
