Poor year for apples and plums
« on: June 21, 2019, 09:27 »
I've been growing several varieties of cooking and eating apples (8 trees in total) for over 30 years and I can't remember such a lean looking crop. Victoria plums I can half understand as the trees were only planted 3 years ago. Conversely, the pears (also planted just three years ago)  look as if they will produce a bumper crop.
All the trees blossomed profusely so I'm wondering if the poor crop has anything to do with the weird warm February and cold May weather causing a lack of pollinating insects at the crucial time.
Anyone else got any thoughts?

It is a weather thing I have never seen so much fruit on any of my fruit trees before, but we had an exceptional February and March so the bees could get onto the blossom and do their thing.

Plum and apple trees are at breaking point with the amount of fruit on them here.
Should once again be a good body system clearing year.  ;)

Not seeing that down here.
The old victorian orchard near me, cared for now by an allotment group I pass every day walking to the beach has been blooming as ever with Apples for a number of weeks.
As has a neighbours with ten apple trees that he has had for 70 + years that his Dad long past planted and I can see from my garden.
My Dad's Apple, plum and cherry trees that are about 25 years old are producing as well as ever.

No pears for the second year, but the 'june drop' on the apples is well under way...

The branches on my Victoria plum and cooking Apple are burgeoning . I have to thin out the apples. Been a good year for all my fruit trees.
