Gooseberry Sawfly
« on: May 15, 2010, 19:54 »
I've noticed some of my gooseberry bushes are missing vast quantities of leaves. Checking the plants, there are small green caterpillars which I assume (thanks to google) are Sawfly larvae.

The bushes are fruiting and quite big so hand clearing them would be troublesome if not impossible, any ideas?

They'll ravage your bush if you don't get rid of them somehow.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Provado Ultimate Bug Killer and repeat in 14 days. Or you can try washing them off with dilute washing up liquid.

I had sawfly last year and they decimated my goosegogs.  This year though, I was waiting for them.  I've got Estoppel and I sprayed the bush and surrounding soil underneath the bushes in March.  So far, fingers crossed, they haven't made an appearance.  I'll spray them again a couple of days before I go away on my 2 week holiday next month, and then again in September :D
