Probably a stupid pea question
« on: January 07, 2011, 19:50 »
Hiya, I am trying peas for the first time this year, and just have a quick question about the suppot they need. The packet says they grow to 2ft. (early onward). Will 2.5 ft canes every 3 or 4 ft do with twine every six inchs up and down (if that makes sense). I am trying not to have to spend too much on the lotty this yr and don't have access to twiggy sticks.

Any advice really welcome, so thanks in advance.
xx

If you have a look here, this is the way I do it:

Quite a few on our site do it the way you suggest, and you quite rightly say you'd need more canes than the stakes I use.

If you use canes, I'd go for 3' ones and try and push them in a little deeper.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Now that is a good idea DD thanks! it really is so obvious when someone points it out to you isnt it?! my little boy will love helping me thread the string too!

Was planning on using the broken old canes i seem to have acquired over a couple of years - some are as long as 4 ft some are only 3 and a half - so hope that will be enough. Another question though - wher have all these old broken canes come from ??? I have only had my plot 2 yrs and i am sure i havn't 'borrowed' this many from my mum!  :tongue2:
