earthing up potatoes with manure

We seem to have a near endless supply of manure on our allotment at the moment.With this in mind,would there be any advantage to earthing up my pots' with just this' rather than the soil from the ridges?

If it's not well-rotted, avoid using it on the plot at this time of year as it will burn fresh growth.

Don't see any reason why you couldn't use well-rotted stuff, but others may have more definite opinions on that.

apparently its 5 years old ,very dark and no smell to it.Its a bit like very light,fine compost,a real contrast to some that was delivered to the allotment last year(stank to high heaven).

Alys used grass cuttings for hers on The Edible Garden and reckoned the crop in the soil was far better than using bags.

Can't the decomposition of manure cause scab ? Read it somewhere on these forums that thats one of the reasons why you manure your potato beds in the autumn. I'll go hunting for the thread....

You can earth up spuds with anything that will exclude light, be in manure or straw, or grass mowings etc

The other reason for not using fresh manure on crops, especially horse manure, is the risk of salmonella. I know the spuds will be washed and boiled but the salmonella can still be on hands and clothes.

The salmonella does not survive if it is heaped for a year.
