Sweet corn in Polytunnel
« on: June 08, 2009, 09:15 »
Would appreciate people's views on viability of growing sweet corn in a polytunnel please. Would probably use ground beneath for salad stuff and squashes. Tunnel is taller than average and plants are direct into soil.
Thanks

I have some in the greenhouse. They need to be planted in a block (rather than row), and in the absence of wind will need manual hand pollination.

The male flowers are already forming on the top of my plants (sown 01-Apr and planted in greenhouse on 04-May)

much appreciated, tunnel has a good breeze through most of time as doors at each end usually left open in the day. Does manual pollination require anything more than a good shaking of each stem from time to time ??????????????

My husband has a large polytunnel and is successfully growing sweetcorn in there no probs at all. Our only grumble is that we didnt plant more as our chickens eat a lot :)
