Purple sprouting brocolli (PSB) questions
« on: June 24, 2011, 23:06 »
I'm thinking of trying PSB now by buying seedlings from the garden centre.

I've heard of early PSB but the ones I see for sale are just labelled 'purple sprouting brocolli'. Is there much difference?

Also, how high to these plants tend to grow? Just thinking ahead to the size of netting cage I will need to build.

Cheers.

PSB are early ones. but there is a new strain of seeds from TM early early ones (somewere in feb onwards) I am trying. the size of netting is a very difficult to gauge. I am growing them for first year and I have 2.5 feet tall net cage.
I've seen people netting around 8 feet cane and the plant about 5 feet tall. :)

and my theory is you wont need netting between november-march as it is a very cold season.  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

My cage was 4 ft tall and the tops of the plants were bent over under the tops by mid feb  :(

so as tall as will stand up to the wind on your site I would suggest  :)

Took us by surprise, so this year we have built a walk in tunnelly construction, for ease of weeding and harvest.

Got PSB, white SB, calabrese and sprouts in it  :D

hi
last year i bought a packet of 4 tyes of PSB which gives you all year round PSB and it almost worked ( we moved allotment in October but I did dig some up and moved it )
I can remember 3 they are summer purple, red arrow and rudolph (will look for the packet tomorrow and post the other and sowing times)  I have just sown rudolph for winter picking.  they do need netting though

Your plants need to be ready about now. Too late to start from seed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
