Suspending water and feeder
« on: January 17, 2011, 09:45 »
I was wondering whether to suspend the water to keep dirt from being kicked into it  which lead on to thinking about doing the same with their feeder too.  My question is how high do you dangle them off the ground?  I've seen pictures where they are just about and inch or two off the floor, also seen pics where they are much much higher, what would you recommend.

11 Chickens (Rhode Rock, Bluebell, Copper Black, Columbine, Coucou, Mystery Hen, Clarance Court, Araucana, brown hen ) , 3 Cats (1 mog, 1 bengal, 1 Bengal x),  2 Little Boys, 1 dog (Golden Retriever) and 1 Husband

My sister has hung them from hanging basket brackets about 6inches off the ground.  She said it keeps a lot of dirt out.

I stand my drinkers on breeze blocks which helps keep the dirt out (unless of course they have had their beaks in the mud  ::))
Staffies are softer than you think.

Some of mine are on blocks, so about 4 inches off the ground.  My new red and white plastic ones have their own feet so they are 3 inches off the ground, but I read once ages ago that as high as chest height, which is what the ones in the hen houses are, so not only does it keep dirt out, but also stops them trying to get their feet in.

The plastic drinkers have their own feet too, but I don't hang any water up and it gets knocked around when they flap and fly around too much!

We started putting the water containers on bricks during the really cold weather and found the water didn't freeze as quickly, we also have the feeders with feet, nice clean food until the chooks found out the 'hat' on top can be knocked off and it can be tipped over if you stand on top and flap your wings enough ::)

Chest high to the hens, that way they cant scratch the feed out and waste it or get their legs in the water for a wash :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

I have my water feeders on filled, upturned plant pots so they can't tip or get dirty. I still find with hanging pellets feeders you do get some on the ground - chooks can be very messy!

Suspend the feeder at back height (above their vents) to prevent fouling but stand the drinker on blocks or bricks or a paving slab to prevent dirt getting in.  If you suspend it will spill bit by bit as they knock against it and will be empty in no time.

Your feeder should be under cover to protect from rain so suspend from the roof of a covered run.

All of mine are suspended at about 5" and I have no problems with spillage etc and the water stays cleaner!

thanks folks, will try suspending them and see how we get on.  Also thought it would keep them off the floor for more space to peck under too.  One of my chickens seems to prefer foraging than just standing and eating pellets so maybe if a few a split she will clear up and that way i get more layers into her too  :D
