asparagus
« on: April 19, 2011, 09:33 »
My 2 yr crowns went in the ground in early 2009, so in that year I did not harvest any asparagus. Last year I harvested a few for about a few weeks (which kept us going more than adequately).

Now this year I am harvesting more but whereas in previous years I let the asparagus grow tall, ferny etc until cutting back later in the year, do I do the same now and subsequently or do I cut the asparagus down once the season is over?

The remaining spears must be allowed to grow into ferns after cropping to replenish the plants for next year's crop (they are not cut down until they have turned brown in late autumn.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

To follow on jay's comment, stop cutting asparagus at the end of June so they can replenish themselves. At the end of the growing season, you can either cut down the brown foliage or leave it to spring. I always leave it so it acts as a bit of mulch for the crowns over winter.

I'm cutting my asparagas now as they are coming up roses :D.  I always stop chopping when I go away for my summer holidays which is always mid-June and I then let the asparagas grow into a mini forest
