Post by: lucky245 on July 22, 2009, 17:37
Any ideas what is wrong with my potatoes.  They are reds with white wart like pustules

Bit blurry - could be common scab - only skin deep.

Had you limed the soil before.

Welcome to the forums by the way.

No, we just dug, manured and planted.   The white pustules are like tiny warts

Just realised that this is in the General Gardening forum, I'll whizz it to GYO where the spud experts lurk.

I have got the exact same on my maincrop Red Spuds (Romano) which I dug up today.
It looks like it is scab and is nothing to worry about as it is only skin deep. As far as I am aware it will not affect either the taste or the tubers storing but I guess it would be best to use them first. It is caused when the soil is too Alkaline, this can happen when the soil has been limed the winter before.

Isn't common scab caused by lack of water at certain growing times as well ? I found it on my spuds from the plants at the ends of the rows. All still tasted great though 1  :)
