chickens
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:00 »
Hi I a new member.
Last year I bought 2 POL hens, both did well laying regluraly even through this winter. Unfortunatley I lost one of them in march this year so bought another 2 POLs.
As expected the older one became bossy and dominant, not as expected it also began laying eratically and the shells seem very thin, sometimes even strange misshaped eggs.  Ive had the 2 new hens about a month, the bossiness seems to have settled down a bit but the new ones have not laid yet.  Should I put this down to just them getting to know each other and establish the pecking order, or should I put some sort of supplement in their feed, they are all on layers pellets just now

Try crushing up some old egg shells & feeding them back?

Staffies are softer than you think.

Ive got oyster shell but the birds rarely take it.  The breader where I got them just called them commercials they are just the standard brown hen

If there not taking it,  chuck some in with the main feed they'll pick it up that way  ;)

Are you feeding anything else but layers ?

I give them all our fresh vegetable waste, when we prepare our meal I chop up all the bits we dont use, leek tops, cauliflower stems & leaves, cabbage leaves, all that kind of stuff, they go for it in a big way and theres been no problems so far

Nice, green veg is so good for them, can't see that would cause you any problems

When ever we had the odd spurt of soft eggs, I sprinkled some extra oyster shell onto their layers as I suggested

I used to give them a couple of drops of Cod Liver Oil too, literally it was 2 drops on a small piece of bread, no problems getting them to eat it
I thought it helped as I think I'd read somewhere about the vitamins in it helping with calcium absorption ?
