agronomist
« on: December 31, 2021, 16:44 »
I was talking to a farmer this morning and he was telling me how well his crops had turned out this year because he had an agronomist managing his crops

He looked most surprised when I said I to had an agronomist to manage my allotment he said who's your agronomist then obviously thinking I was telling him porkies then I said my agronomist is my wife she's always telling me what and how to grow veg on the allotments and to be honest I'm intending  to let her plan the allotments raised beds etc this season  I'm going back to being an allotment labourer

anyway needless to say my farmer went away shaking his head as he left I said I bet my agronomist is cheaper than yours  :D no reply  :nowink:

One of my oldest friends is a farmer, and he explained to me once that farming is a pretty lonely sort of job, as you're on your own most of the time!

I guess that working the land is lonesome, with just a tractor to chat to, but getting in a 'specialist' seems a bit odd, when one's experience in getting stuff to grow counts for a lot these days.

My pal went to Wye College, (gone now), and had to learn everything from scratch, and while he was from a land-owning family, they very nearly went pop when his dad was lost at sea (boating accident), and he had to get the place up and running PDQ! I only found this out a couple of years ago!

But I just couldn't work on a farm with animals, as they'd all get names and we'd just love them, and hate to get the vet round...

I know where you coming from growster and yes I to have farmer friends that wouldn't pay for an agronomist for love or money having learnt there farming skills from there fathers  and also having attended agricultural collage

again some farmers tend to rely on an agronomist for advise on growing and achieving the best results from there crops its debatable if the cost of paying an agronomist out ways the profit margins at the end of the season

The land owner out back has one who goes around all the fields at least 7 here and lots more elsewhere, and takes samples and say where and what fertlizer to use.
Agronomists are self employed and do this for several farmers. Depends on how much land, Dyson owns Beeswax and is probably the biggest landowner up here with lots of farmers working for him.

Agronomists are experts at maximizing the productivity is soil-crop systems. You can think of their role as a "crop doctor". They also serve as a go-between for farmers and agricultural scientists.

I used to do some work with an agronomist in Puerto Rico.  I helped with taking samples of soil and vegetation for a farm that produced hay on land where wastewater solids were applied, and high-production hay used that solids as fertilizer. At one time, that one farm produced 11% of all hay grown on the island. Between me and the agronomist, we made sure the soil was supporting the hay at maximum productivity, and the hay was of high quality for the animals.
