Title: New chickens have arrived
Post by: Clareg on May 27, 2011, 14:39
Hi

I collected my 2 new chickens yesterday afternoon  :)

I have named them Matilda (a Brown Nick) and Tallulah (a Blue).

This morning I got my 1st egg - I am sooo pleased :-)

Now just got to continue trying to teach the dogs that the chickens are their friends!!!

:)

Lovely girls, and from what I can make out, they are living in 5* luxury accommodation. Any chance of a piccie of your hen house please?

They look lovely, as far as the dogs go just introduce them a little bit at a time and in the end the dogs wont even give them a second look, this worked for me  :)

Thanks. I will take a picture of the hen house today (now that it is not raining outside!). They are both 19 weeks old.   As for the dogs, I am completely surprised... One of them isn't very keen on the chickens and pretty much keeps his distance and the other one is absolutely fascinated with them and just stands with his nose pressed against the cage staring in! He's had a peck on the nose through the wire but it hasn't upset him. The birds generally just ignore him - phew!!

Here is a picture of the hen house with Eddie, the Jack Russel who is fascinated by the hens :)

And also a picture of the run that my husband built this weekend which (once treated) will attach to the hen house to increase their play area  :)

lucky hens!  Your JRT seems fascinated, like mine.  A few weeks ago my JRT, Sparky, went down to the vegetable plot where the hens are.  One of the hens had escaped out of the enclosure and was happily demolishing the new shoots and Sparky just ingored her.  I was amazed!   Now the new chicks have arrived he will stand for ages gazing at them!
