Is it worth trying to grow salad leaves under glass now?

Have just picked the last of my Red Alert tomatoes from the cold frame (total yield 16lbs from just 2 plants - amazing!)  :tongue2:

Was thinking of cutting the top off the large growbag and trying to grow some sort of lettuce or salad leaves in there for winter use. I tried this last year with a random mixture of cut-and-come-again salad leaves but they didn't really amount to much.

Anyone had any luck sowing this late under glass and if so which varieties?

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I think its worth a try.  I'm going to give it a go in the greenhouse, but may add the kerosene lamp if it gets too chilly.

I grow lettuce (there are a good few winter varieties) endive (the pale green bitter crispy leaves you get in bagged salad) rocket, spinach and corn salad (the little rosettes of deep green in bags)
all in the greenhouse, i sowed them all afew days ago, as i cleared some finished tomatoes :)
You have to be careful with ventilation and watering because of mildew, as I found out last year
Lettuce seems to peter out in Jan (but it was very cold last winter :( ) but the rest carried on till spring :)
I am still looking for a mildew resistant winter lettuce, so if anybody finds one please let me know :D

I've sown Winter Density and Rouge d'Hiver hardy lettuce which are just coming up. I'm going to transfer them to the raised bed and cloche if necessary. They're supposed to grow all winter. I've also got red and green hardy mustards which can be grown outside with some protection.

Sorry don't know how winter hardy it would be as they have bred a 'winter gem' variety.

the hardy winter lettuces can be grown outside with no protection at all, but a bit of fleece or cloche does help stop rain splashing muddying them up

The best mixture I've grown is Misticanza (mine was from Seeds of Italy) which was completely winter hardy and kept me in mixed leaves for ages.  These were grown out on the plot  :)
