I'm a bit confused on the information given .  If I start chitting mine now, am I ok to put them in an unheated spare bedroom with the curtains open, or do I need to put the heating on a bit?

Nope. They just get "planted" into a trench part-filled with well rotted manure.

(I'm not proposing that as a recommendation! that's just what lazy-bones here does)

I do use fertilizer in for the spuds I grow in bags. They get the same manure-feet treatment, but also some granular Potato fertilizer (some Vitax Organic stuff that I got form JBA along with my seed tubers)

My advice would be: No heat required. (so long as the spare bedroom doesn't fall below freezing - I've stayed with some people where I reckon it did when we stayed - maybe they were trying to tell me something!)

Potatoes everywhere in the garden centres. Surely that's too early , especially for those new at gardening? New thing for a regular haunt of mine though, selling them loose, ideal for those of us growing in tubs. I always put too many in because I don't want to waste them.....yes I know, I won't get more taters, but I can't seem to bring myself to chuck them out!

I've now bought mine from Wilkinson, as I trust myself to store them better than them and I know I have got what I want then.  I will store in the dark in the shed for a while, just bringing them indoors if it goes below freezing, I shall insulate then a bit, with whatever spare packaging I can find.  That's my job for tonight

I generally keep mine in the bottom of the fridge until I want to chitt them - perfect conditions.

I don't have enough spare room in the fridge.  I have bought 6kg plus a couple of bags with 5 seed potatoes in them.

hi kristen i note your comments regarding potato fertilizer the plot i intend to plant my spuds on this year are where i had my brassicas set last year

the plot had manure put on  last year prior to planting my brassicas i mite be tempted to use some granular fertilizer on the spuds this year  growmore seems my best bet i think growmore is a 7-7-7- formula is this correct so it would be OK to use on the spuds  one thinks

My Vitax "Special Organic Potato Fertiliser" is 4 : 2.5 : 8

So Less Phosphorus and more Potassium (than Nitrogen)

Dunno now important that is though. For some some Growmore will be better than nothing,

i have been offered some fert for the lottie from my farmer friend today he has some with no nitrogen thats OK for my spuds sorted

and some nitrogen based fert for my brassicas sorted
