I know I've only got a few weeks of the season left but does anyone have any recommendations for asparagus knives? Been making a bit of a mess (torn stems) below the ground despite trying to keep my kitchen knife sharp...

Obtain cheap poker from the charity shop.  heat the end in the fire until 'cherry red' and bash the end flat using the kerbstone outside your house and a big hammer.  Using the same kerbstone and a bit of vegetable cooking oil, rub away until you have a reasonably sharp edge to it.

I find a small knife with a serrated blade works best - as you say a plain blade is hard to keep sharp enough to avoid carnage in your patch!

Mine was part of a set of 3 cheapo knives from Tossco if I remember correctly, and is the one you usually haven't got a clue what it's supposed to be used for!

My mum just uses a long old serrated knife she got at a boot sale. It's done the job well for decades.
