Is laying a new turf lawn every year necessary?

I have a neighbour who lays a new turf lawn over the existing one every single year. I for the life of me cannot see what is wrong with the lawn to have to lay a new one every year on top of the existing one! It's now at least 5in higher than the ground. Each to there own and all that but I just think it's a big waste of money. Is there a benefit in doing this instead of looking after the original?

Has any member of his or her family disappeared in mysterious circumstances recently?

Perhaps has an inferiority complex and is making certain he or she will be able to look down on everyone else in years to come!

Could be easier to ask, because I for one haven't got a sensible answer as you've probably noticed!

I am aware that he has OCD and it's common knowledge that he is a bit odd but harmless :-/

Ah but does he lay it green side up

maybe if it gets weeds he wants it perfect so puts another one on top, or maybe the turf salesman told him a porky

The front lawn looks like a multi-layered green sponge cake! I mean you can clearly see the numerous layers of lawn sandwiched on top of each other! I think I may have burst his bubble as I am a keen and I think 'normal' gardener and I moved to my house 2yrs ago and the previous owners had zero interest in gardening so there wasn't much to the front

Sorry, msg got cut off as I accidentally hit the wrong key!
Basically, I put a lot of hard graft into my front garden and brought it to life including the dying shrubs so I've probably upset him :-/

That's a strange one but, as he has OCD, perhaps understandable. Have you tried asking him why?

perhaps he has a bad memory and remembers he was going to turf his lawn, but forgets he already did it last year.
