Bit of an experiment with growing in containers
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:55 »
At the weekend I bought myself some lovely 150L (approx) and 100L (approx) planters.  They are window box shaped, though I'd love to see a window cill large enough for one lol!

The larger ones are 1m long by about 45cm deep; the smaller are 80cm long by about 40cm deep.

So as a bit of an experiment I put cauli and celery in one of the large ones, and 1 aubergine, 1 butternut and 1 melon in the other.  It is a bit intensive, but they have brand new compost in them, so I hope that they will be OK.

In the smaller ones, I plan to grow mini salad veggies (short carrots, mini beets, radishes, mesclun etc).

The first of my dwarf beans are through in my other pots, and it is always exciting when your own seed grows, rather than buying plugs from a garden centre :)

Add some garden manure or chicken pellets as well.
The nutrients in compost can disappear quite quick, they are often just a medium with liquid fertiliser applied. So it can wash out pretty quick, also gets used quick.

Growing in containers can be good fun, you can try things out.

My containers are not very pretty, as they were for re-cycled stuff, but they are green and last year I had some wonderful stubby carrots and huge spring onions in 2.  This year I have the carrots, spring onions and in a third one beetroot, which seems to be romping away!

Good luck with them Casey!
