After spuds....?
« on: July 13, 2013, 19:12 »
Our potatoes in bags are now up, dry and in a sack in the dark.  So what can I put in the bags to make the most of the growing season, please?

I've put in some beetroot, spinach, spring onions, lettuce and lamb's lettuce, but what else can I grow, please?  I can add BFB and chicken manure pellets as well as worm compost/tea to improve the soil...

Many thanks,
C

The classic for after the spuds is winter brassicas.  Cabbages take a lot of room but can't see why you couldn't do kale for salad leaves this autumn or greens in the spring. Chard or perpetual spinach would be good as well and would last you for after the spinach crop has finished  :)

Oriental greens are quick and easy, but best to hang on until it cools down a bit before sowing them as they bolt easily  :)

Ooh, ta.
Can't do brassicas in baskets as the soil is too loose and if I compact it I can't afford to fill it!!

Am liking the kale and oriental greens idea.  Any that bolt can go hen-wards. ;)

You hens will be rooting for them to bolt   That's after they have demolished the courgette footballs  ;)

Leeks, if you can get them,  will grow fine in bags - if you are ok with mini leeks, then 6-9 per bag will grow well enough.

I've just lifted a row of Kestrel 2nd earlies and replaced them with two rows of module raised beetroot. The next row out will be replaced with module lettuce which is almoat bursting out.
