tomato quality issue
« on: August 23, 2012, 12:58 »
Hi, I have at last over the last ten days or so been able to pick ripened tomatoes from the greenhouse.

However i'm finding that they are not very good quality and have tough skins with a spongy flesh inside. they are also not as tasty as I hoped for.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong

Could it be an outdoor type you are growing indoors?

Could you name the variety?

Cheers,    Tony.

I know very little about growing tomatoes (although I do grow them), but I  have noticed a lot of recent posts talking about tough tomato skin and saying that it is because they have taken so long to change from green to red (owing to the strange weather this year). :)

yes, I'm sorry - but it's something else to blame on the weather :(

Thanks for the replies. I'm growing moneymakers. I have done them before with far better results in the small plastic greenhouses

This year in a proper greenhouse

I know it's a matter of individual taste - but I think that Moneymaker are  tasteless anyway  :(

There are much better tasting tomatoes to be had  ;)

Not enough sunshine /water and food
this is one of an Italian selection i tried this year its a Cor Di Bui weighed in at 9.5 ounces like the initial sentence i had loads of flowers but little pollination at most from twenty flowers i got 3 toms however it did let them grow without straining the plant

I agree completely, when you've tasted Gardeners delight and Sungold (my 2 favourites) you'll never grow Moneymaker again.

Did you water them regularly?
Iregular watering can cause split skins but also tougher skins and the flesh doesn't fill with enough water so can becomes spongey/leathery in texture!

That's also my take on "Moneymaker" here's one such previous posting of mine:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew Sungold last year (or the year before?) and hated them. They were very prone to splitting and I thought they tasted disgusting. But I do like the Italian toms for cooking/sauces/paste/drying, Gartenperle for cherries and Alicante for a good big eating tomato. I've lost all my outdoor bush and cherry toms to blight, but my tunnel toms are fine and cropping well. I've been picking some lovely big Alicante from my tunnel this week and the San Marzano are just turning red now too, with a very good crop from both varieties.
