Sweet Peas
« on: March 01, 2007, 21:59 »
Just planted out a line of sweet pea seedlings to make a pretty wind-break for pole beans to be planted in April.
Do you think I should protect them against possible frost now, and should I use clear plastic cloche or fleece? :?

you know you pinch out the 1st shoot and it gives you another shoot,
do you pinch that one off or leave it ?

i do the first then the second of each primary stem then every third .depending on how fast they grow and if i can be bothered  i will try and feed them well with liquid manure n water  well so they form a tree with numerous flowers coming on

In my experience ...
... sweet peas that are sown direct are much sturdier, healthier plants than those grown on it pots.

I make little cloches for mine out of the tops of plastic bottles.  Then as you want to harden them off you just go round and take the tops of during the day and put em back on at night ...  :D

You could try, probably not until May though, planting in pots, some morning glory to add to your sweetpeas, just as the sweetpeas are starting to get past their best the morning glory is ... well ... glorious ... of a morning ..
