Title: How much use is a plastic greenhouse?
Post by: JulesJ on November 16, 2008, 09:31
Got one the other week. We'd always considered we wouldn't have space for a 'proper' greenhouse, but this is 6' X 4' and fits okay on the patio. I'm just wondering how well it will do in terms of frost protection and growing indoor summer crops (ventilation problems, for example, as it has a single roll-up door at one end); what kind of difference it will make temperature-wise.

Have I bought a dud? Anyone used a plastic greenhouse and found it a benefit? Will I be better off retiring it in a couple of years and buying a glass one instead? We could possible fit in a slightly longer one, but wider than 4' isn't going to be possible in our narrow garden. It's sited in the only possible place really.

I used one of these for a couple of years and it was ok.  Ventilation was the worst problem and if I left the door closed it got like a sauna inside.  The other problem was wind (not mine), on a very windy day if it was not pegged or weighted down it blew away.  My proper greenhouse is far superior but your plastic one will serve you well for a couple of years.

Thanks - blowing away shouldn't be a problem as it's wedged in the right-angle of two fences and the base poles are weighted down with slabs.

I might stick a thermometer in there so I can keep an eye on the temperature.
