How to split this plant.
« on: September 09, 2019, 16:05 »
I recently purchased a Verbascum Rigida.    Lovely plant, but very pot bound in a 2ltr pot.   My aim is to split it down and pop 2 or 3 around the beds.    I know I should do it with 2 forks or spades, but I might not be strong enough.    Will it be ok to use my little garden saw if I need to.   Mrs Bouquet

Try to pull the roots of each bit apart, if you saw it you risk cutting the roots off one piece.
That's what I did yesterday - an old wooden barrel had broken apart, so had to empty It and tipped out an old fuchsia bush. I couldn't separate the roots, so sawed through the middle (I thought!) Thus finally prised apart it turned out one half had all the roots. I suspect the all but rootless part will die despite both parts being hard pruned. Oh well  ::)
Good luck if you do have to take the saw to yours.

Thanks Mum,  I will clip some of the but off the bottom and then tease it with my fingers.    Sorry to hear about your plant.   How aggravating.    I have to saw the bamboos in halves, when they finally become root bound in their big tubs  ::)  Thanks again,   Mrs Bouquet
