Peony Root

I've got a peony Karl Rosenfield bare root which I picked up at B&Q early this summer. Would it still viable for planting? If so when is best to put it in?

Now is the ideal time to plant bare root, but I'm a little confused as to why you picked up a bare root in the summer, normally an odd time for availability, and why it isn't planted.

If it's still in it's packaging - you'll be very lucky if it grows now  ::)

Peony roots are almost as tough as rhubarb roots. As long as the root isn't mushy or a dried up old knob, it'll likely grow if planted now in a pot of growing mix and not overwatered.

It's been kept in a polythene bag filled with compost in a dark/cool shed. Had a look at it this morning and am soaking it in water for a few hours as directed. It's not dried out and there is a bud (not sure if that is the correct term) on the crown.

If it does grow would I see a shoot by next spring?
