Gooseberry question/cheeky request!
« on: September 30, 2014, 18:31 »
Am hoping to create a gooseberry patch this Autumn, to increase the yield and variety of this fruit that I've completely fallen in love with and can't get enough of lol. I'm looking for sources of dessert goosegogs only...I have bushes of Hinnonmaki Red and Invicta, both of which were delicious this year, especially Invicta when it fully ripened...yum!! Have a Leveller plant and a Langley Gage from Chris Bowers. Am looking for old varieties such as Bedford Yellow, Yellow Champagne, Thumper, Caterina etc. I've had a look at places like Rougham Hall Nursery, R V Roger, etc but they're mainly sold out. Does anyone know where I could get some of these older varieties, or does anyone have cuttings/small plants they'd be willing to sell me? Thank you!

Ah ok, apologies for that, didn't know. I'll be even cheekier then and ask if anyone has any cuttings they would give me (I'll pay for postage of course)! Have a few jostaberry and chilean guava small plants to swap if anyone is interested.

Have you tried RV Roger Ltd?

They certainly list Yellow Champagne amongst other old varieties

Hope that helps  :)

I'm afraid I don't know what variety mine are as I inherited them with my plot. I suspect they are a modern common cheap variety as there not that big a plant yet.

I've acquired a number of the older gooseberry varieties and did quite a bit of hunting around to find suppliers in the UK. The best I found for the old types are, in no particular order, RV Roger, Rougham Nurseries, Bowers, and J.Tweedie Fruit Trees in Dumfries. I've bought from them all. Of these, J.Tweedie seemed to have the biggest range at least at one time, but doesnt/didnt have a website; I bought mail order having first sent off a good old fashioned SAE for a price list. Aside from these, most suppliers just carry a small selection of the newer mildew resistant varieties such as Invicta and Xenia.
