Chicken medicine cabinet?
« on: October 12, 2007, 13:13 »
I was wondering what other chicken keepers use as medicines for their chooks. As humans we have pain killers and cough and indigestion remedies, plasters  and bandages creams and lotions as a stand by what should the chicken keeper have standing by just in case. As a relative newbee to keeping chickens any advise would be appreciated.

hmmm that's a good idea, especially if you have alot of birds (we only have two so i reckon things would expire before we'd need to use them)

we do have a ''cat/dog medicine box'' - which has various antiseptic sprays/creams, eye ointment, dog claw clippers, dog toothbrush -- used only a couple of times  , also a spare reflective cat collar for when toby manages to lose his collar AGAIN...

so far the hens have been trouble free compared to our cats/dogs!

Wormer - use every 6 months

Diatom - dust inside eglu as anti red mite

Purple Spray - for bare bums and small wounds and anti peck spray

Wound Powder - used once for cut foot (chickens, not mine)

Barrier Red Mite Powder - never used

Garlic powder and Apple Cider Vinegar - Food addatives rather than medications

I also have Stockholm tar - to prevent pecking also Vaseline for the cockerels
(I dab their combs if it gets below freezing) also use it if I suspect scaley leg mites for any birds
Apple cider vinegar good allrounder for digestion
A wormer - flubenvent Aunt Sally recommends
Wound powder
Good quality toe clippers for the end of spurs and for overgrown beaks
Poultry Boost - vitamins for new/stressed or convalescing birds only
A mini defibrillator - for cardiac arrest (also atropine IV)
IV Fluids - dextrose, n, saline, antibiotics  etc
Oxygen and aneathestic for surgery..............
