Green potatoes too long or too little
« on: July 12, 2014, 16:09 »
I have had my potatoes in since April, pulled some today as they flowered and are dying back a bit, mostly tiny little things but some much larger ones but when i rub them they are quite green, the skin looks a bit mottled, have i left them too long or are they not ready thanks

The only reason they'll be green is if you haven't earthed them up sufficiently.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If the green can be peeled off to leave normal coloured flesh underneath they should be OK, but if you can't it's a definite no-no - green spuds not only taste nasty but are poisonous, especially if eaten in any quantity.

As DD says, the only reason they do turn green is if they have been exposed to light.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

No they are green right through, aw so disappoined I only foraged in one bag so hopefully the others will be okay, the bags were various sizes, this was a shop bought grow bag, but all my others are from upcycling those giant ikea blue bags and those fabric recycling bags you get with holes cut underneath, scared to check the others now have about 7 bags in total, gotta get 1 good lot  :lol:o

According to John Harrison in his Essential Allotment Guide, a little green will go away if you keep them in the dark, a tin box or the like.  But if they are green right through... goners I'm afraid. :(
