Starting again, next year
« on: July 12, 2014, 17:06 »
Sorry to start, here is some slightly unnecessary back story:

Purchased a house in January that came with a very overgrown allotment, at the back of the garden. We have since cleared the allotment and had some success with growing a few vegetables. However, we have had a lot of problems with bind weed and I'm now too pregnant to carry on with the gardening. Also we are in the process of gutting the house.

I would like to know if I covered the raised beds in manure and a weed membrane- could I leave the allotment for the rest of the summer, autumn and winter, to start again next year. Would this undo all the hard work? Would this get rid of the bind weed/stop the allotment becoming a jungle again?

All suggestions are welcome... Thank you!

Welcome to the site  :)

Covering it up will stop the weeds getting any worse but probably won't prevent them entirely next year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If I were you I'd glyphosate thr area before putting down the manure and fabric. Let it grow for a few weeks first so there's plenty of growth to take it down into the roots. Leave it a week and then cover it. That should weaken the bindweed so that doesn't  regrow too strongly once covered.
