Have six hokus |Gherkin plants doing nicely in the greenhouse have pickled about 8 jars worth so far and they keep coming!!!

As a new veg grower I would be interested to know more about your gherkins:
when did you plant the seed?
what conditions are they growing in in your greenhouse?
do they need staking/supports?
what size do you pick them at?

HI there,

yes they need staking and i planted them in normal compost for Homebase then used an electric propergator...they dont flower for ages i srated them about Feb...does that help

i have a few gherkins growing too! Do you have a good recipe for pickling them ?

HI there yes i do.

i have the Mrs beeton preserves book...found it ina old book shop cost me 50p.

Basically you wash the gherkins and soak them in salt water for 3 days then wash throughly and then place them into sterilised jar with pickling vinegar....works well.

The seeds I used are for "Seeds of Italy", they are fine outside, grew really rampant and saved the valuable space in the greenhouse.

The fruit was just covered overnight with straight salt before pickling.
