Dodgy Compost
« on: June 21, 2010, 10:08 »
Ew......

Just been looking at my baby broad beans and they have pet fungi!

Am blaming the 'New Horizon' peat free compost!- was on a buy 2 get 1 free, and I now know why!

Its nasty stuff- seems more a mix of shavings an semi rotted manure and is foul. The mature plants dont mind and putting around things that I have planted outs been OK (and a way to get rid of it!)

But there  was just the right amount left to start a few more beans off!

The baby beans seem fine, and the fungi looked happy until I stuck them out in the sun, they are not fond of this!! (unlike the beans!)

Antoher one to add to the list of 'dont touch with barge pole'

Hubbie suggested buying a bulk buy of cheap compost now, and stacking it up to finish composting ready for next year- I pointed out when we get another 4x4 we can fill it with manure and do the same for free!

Think I will splash out on 1 decent bag for the last few things I start off!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

If you look at some of the posts it seems that Wickes compost is pretty good.

Go to the post entitled 'Homebase Multi purpose compose ( bottom of page 2 at the moment) there is a big discussion on the various manufacturers.

I got a bag of the New Horizon stuff having seen a Which? report that said it was the best of the peat-free ones.  It's disgusting stuff - the smell of it alone was revolting, and it was full of undecomposed stuff that had to be removed.  Fortunately a kind friend gave me some pallets for compost bins, so I'll be making my own compost for next year...
