« on: August 26, 2009, 20:54 »
hi,
i have 10 week old chickens and normally they go into the house and roost before dark, but tonight i have had to put themin the house, they were trying to sleep outside. i have checked the underside of the perch for any signs of mites, and not sure what else to do. up to an hour ago i would have said  they were bright,i havent seen them eat much today but it has been really bad weather today so i havent been watching them as much today, any ideas anyone

Go out with a torch tonight whilst it's dark to check for red mite. They may not have been hiding on the perches. Also check to see if you coup has got any rat gnaw marks on it as they could have been frightened by the noise of the rats chewing.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Get a tissue and push it into any cracks and crevices if it comes out with spots of blood you have red mites, often they can't be seen just by looking. Your chooks certainly won't want to spend a night somewhere where they are being attacked at night.
