No... not S&M  but one of these:

I've never seen one of these in the flesh so to speak.  But I'm sure some of you who have kept hens for years know about them.

Sometimes passed from the reproductive system.  I think they could be a bit of tumor tissue the hen needs to get rid of - but that is just a guess on my part.

I have a number of hen keeping friends who have experienced this and I can never find any published information.
Any one know what they really are :?:

its not a tumour its cloaca tissue lining  they can dump it if things such as a condition like irritable bowel syndrome   happens ,chances are  this bird may not lay eggs again and may go down hill in health .nothing can be done just feed and water it as normal if you want to keep it , its hard to find a bird that lost it ina flock my size so i dont worry about it  some birds have survived after this .
still alive /............

Thanks Munty.  I knew you would have come across this before.  The hens I know are pets of cause, so egg production is not the main reason for keeping them.  I'll ask around and find out how affected hens had done afterwards.  Many thanks  :D

I am sure this will be good in the long run as I win't have an attack should I now see this in my run, but how horrible is that :-(
