Title: We are fostering an injured dog- sad news
Post by: Oliveview on August 04, 2012, 14:23
One of the smaller male dogs was attacked by 2 or 3 of the bigger dogs last Thursday- a female  is on heat- so problems.  He has loads of stitches and wounds- he is now in our bathroom.  He looks very poorly.  He has just been sick- I hope it was because he drank some water after getting here, it was hot in the car- and he hasn´t been eating or drinking.
I will keep you informed on his progress.

I am not cut out for the ´work´ at the refugio, I cried and cried when I saw how the poor dog was, I hate seeing animals suffer.
At the moment he is not looking good, we have just bought some Aquarius water, it is a tonic kind of drink.  I have given him a paracetamol ground down and put it in the water and syringed it into him.   I have been warned he might die, fingers crossed he will be ok.

We have cleaned his wounds, he looked so sad.  We rolled him over, didn´t want to hurt him.  He bit a lady at the refugio this morning, she took out a drip needle- he isn´t normally nasty- I guess he is in pain.  He has had his medication, I will give him another half a paracetamol at about midnight. I ground it to a powder and put it in the water drink (Aquarius, a glucose sport drink)  I have given him 10mg every 30 min or so.  He has just got up and walked to the other side of the bathroom, not that that is far- just 2 steps for us!  Our dogs have been to look, I knew Lola would be no problem, Jumbo has looked and not made a noise, much to my surprise- he knows Ratón is ill (I am calling him Poppet)  The cats are interested, they are use to dogs so I can´t see them being a problem.  We will have to wait to see if Ratón/Poppet likes cats! If he does... just maybe....  we might keep him.... if Jim falls in love with him.....

Off topic- what is your picture Impd?  I thought it was a sanitary towel!

Back on subject-  Ratón/Poppet has moved across the room, now moved back to his cover to sleep on.

Well he is still breathing this morning- he got up and had a drink of water- then did a big pee- not as big as the pee he did late last night, they all but ran under the door!
Ratón/Poppet isn´t interested in the rice and chicken- but I am still giving him the Aquarius water every 30 min or so, aprox 10 ml a time.
He looks dreadful when he lays down, but when he is laying with his head upright he doesn´t look so bad.  He gets a tetanus jab later on, Natalia, who is a helper at the refugio is a nurse, so she is coming over later on.  I will wait until then to clean his wounds, I don't want to pull him about too much.

I was a bit worried when I opened the door, he was fast asleep, I looked to see if his chest was moving - it was, Phew!!  I have just given him his first tablet, a paracetamol, ground down in his water, so I gave it a little at a time over an hour.

Sounds like you are doing a great job. Have they given him an antibiotic injection? I wouldn't worry too much about him not eating yet. You are keeping him hydrated which is the main thing.
Title: Re: We are fostering an injured dog
Post by: Oliveview on August 05, 2012, 10:11
We took Ratón/Poppet outside- our dogs looked on but didn´t get too close, they know he is ill.  The wound on his neck is leaking fluid, it is clear though, well a little pink, but not gunky like it is infected.  He has antibiotics, 1 tablet cut into 3 and a 3rd twice a day- again I ground it down and added it to his special water.  I offered him some boiled rice (with chicken) and he turned his nose up, so I put some on my hand and he ate it, just about 1/2 tsp  but he ate  :D :D
Boy does he stink of dog/antiseptic- our bathroom does too now!  :(  I washed the floor with water and bleach, Jim had a quick shave and wash while the bathroom was free- luckily we have an outside loo  we can use.
The flies soon appeared when we were outside with Ratón/Poppet  :(  He is now trying to wash his sore paw- yesterday he just lay on his side and looked like he was dying, today, as Jim said, if he were a betting man he would put money on him being ok.  Fingers crossed still.

Fingers crossed here as well - from what you have said he does sound a little better. You are so good to look after him.  :)
Title: Re: We are fostering an injured dog
Post by: Oliveview on August 05, 2012, 12:58
Natalia came from the refugio lunchtime to check on Ratón/Poppet and while cleaning the wounds discovered fly eggs in a wound   He was very good and let her clean him up, but at the end when we wanted to change his cover (the third time today the washing machine has gone on for covers) he growled, he had had enough- he has just moved to the other side of the bathroom, so a clean cover is down ( a quilt cover a friend gave me that I have not used) and an old towel over the top, so hopefully I can change the towel and not have to wash the quilt cover.
He has been a little sick, so she is back later on with medicine to stop the sickness and more antibiotic cream for the puncture wounds.
We will take him to the vet tomorrow and see what he says, if he says it is better he is put to sleep we will do that, sad as it will be, but we will do what the vets says is best.   I know what dog I would like to put to sleep instead

He looks so sad since he has been ´cleaned out´  poor lad.  I am giving him the fluids about 1 tsp  every 15 min- he is swallowing some of it, so at least he should not dehydrate.  Thank goodness there are no flies here, makes a change!  My sister arrives tomorrow night, hope she doesn´t want to go out and about- we are a bit  housebound now!

He does sound as if he is improving.  You are doing all you can but I agree that it should be the vets decision.  Fingers crossed that he makes a good recovery.   ;)

Post by: Oliveview on August 05, 2012, 20:35
Natalia came this evening and cleaned the wounds again and packed them out with gauze.  She covered the gauze loosely with more gauze, which promptly fell off- he was standing on his cover looking like a 4 year old had been playing nurse/Dr with him     He had bits hanging off everywhere
He is fast asleep again, the swelling ig going down under his chin, it isn´t dripping anymore.  He has moved his position in the bathroom a few times.  Can´t get him to eat anything.  Still giving him the Aquarius water 2ml every 15 min or so.  When he stands up he is sick- just a little.  The vet that treated him is on holiday tomorrow so he will have to go to the vet we use.

I have just given Ratón/Poppet another 1/2 paracetamol this time I didn´t ground it down, so I hope he can keep it down better. He has had another 2ml of the water stuff, he has only peed once today, but I guess there is nothing to pee if he isn´t drinking much.  Off to bed now, will get up through the night to feed him some more water.

Up at 2.24am to check him, he looked dreadful- gave him more fluids via syringe-  back to bed, up 30 min later for more- back to bed.  I couldn´t sleep, my mind is in overdrive- will he die? Will he live?  what will the vet do?
I got back up at 4.45 to check again and I opened the door dreading what I would see and he was standing in the middle of the room (still with bits of dressings hanging off him)   He looked a bit brighter, so I thought I would try him on the chicken and rice- he woofed it down, got a bit fussy and picked out the chicken!!    :D  :D  :D  He must have eaten a good handful  :D :D :D :D :D
He is a skeleton though, poor lad.  He was trying to sit down, he is still in pain.  I hope he likes cats and our dogs like him, then maybe Jim will let us keep him....  he needs castrating- chipping etc.

Pamela so pleased he seems to be getting that little bit better. I hope your dogs home is like the one I get my dogs from and who I support a lot because they never put a healthy dog down - I really cannot understand why a healthy dog should be PTS. Our rescue home has had to take in 3 lots from Ireland in the last week (the last lot was on Sunday 03.30am collection at Bristol Ferry consisted of 2 collies, 1 dalmatian, a mum and her four 2 week old pups - all very underweight and terrified  :().

Have only just caught up with this story Pamela.

You are doing a brilliant nursing job and it sounds as though poor little Poppet has turned the corner. It is heartbreaking to see them suffer so much.

I always used to try sick dogs with some fish, sardines or tuna would often tempt them. Also a shot of B12 can work wonders but I expect your vet is taking care of that aspect.

Keep up the good work - you're brilliant!!  :)

Not good news I am afraid- the vet said Ratón/Poppet is very poorly and very dehydrated (i was giving him 2ml or more Aqurarius water  every 15 min)
The vet said he is to stay there over night on a drip- we went to see him, he was laying there shaking.  I hope he makes it.  I know what O would like to do to the dog that did this to him

There is a Freecycle local to you Pamela.  Here's the Link http://groups.freecycle.org

You could use Freecycle to advertise lost/founds/wanted ads etc all free of course. It's a good way of promoting your work and letting people know that you're there.  Our RSPCA and dog warden collections all appear on our local Freecycle and it's a helpful tool for them, especially as regards rehoming, fostering and getting towels and bedding etc

Fingers crossed for your little dog  :)

At least he is in good hands Pamela. An  infusion will combat the hydration much better than you can when syringing small amounts in to a dog that is likely to be sick, no matter how regularly you do it. Sorry to hear he isn't improving as much as we would like, my heart goes out to you and little Poppet. Just remember, whatever the outcome, you have done your very best for him. I hope you have good news in the morning.

You're a wonderful champion for unfortunate animals, Pamela. I couldn't work at animal rescues because I don't think I could cope with all the abuse these poor animals suffer from. But I'd never turn down an injured animal.

Fingers crossed that Poppet pulls through and recovers. Sounds like he knows he's found a good home. He looks like a real sweetheart.
Title: Fostering an injured dog UPDATE so terrifying the attack
Post by: Oliveview on August 07, 2012, 14:15
For some reason I can´t reply to my previous thread- not a clue why

We went to the vets this morning to check on Ratón/Poppet and had to wait as the vets was heaving.  I queue jumped to ask how he was (see I am getting more Spanish every day   )  Well the other folk had dogs, I just wanted to check on the dog we took in.

He was awake, his eyes followed us about but he was still laying down attached to a drip.  I looked at his gums- they were white  :(
The vet was very busy, so I asked if he was ok and she said he was.  We will go back tomorrow to see him.   The vet has agreed for the refugio to pay him over a few weeks, so that is good, although I think they might raise the money soon.  He is a mess, my sister, who is staying, was shocked how badly injured he was.

Will update if/when I get more news.

Pamela

PS  Any idea why I can´t reply to the other thread?

This is a report that was sent to the friends of the refugio on facebook-  I have cried and cried.  They named him Lazarus as he was raised from the dead.    It is not good reading.

For: Today we are writing to ask you for help, only dedicate a minute to read this post and collaborate whomsoever you please. A dog from our shelter, Lazarus, which you can see from the pictures, was attacked last Thursday by some dogs our shelter. The attack was brutal and lasted about 15 minutes before the impotence of the volunteers who were there who could do nothing to chase the dogs were attacking him. Were a few minutes of anguish and despair that our Lazarus ended badly injured and fainted from pain, in shock, full of bites all over his body and neck torn completely. We took him quickly to the vet, where he was given points everywhere and they said they probably would not survive. Luckily, Lazarus got through the most critical 72 hours without eating, just drinking, barely able to move from pain, only fueled by serum. We have been taking the antibiotic, antiinflammatory and vitamin K2, but is so mailto we had to enter it in a clinic today, because you need the constant care and supervision of the veterinarian. Lazarus is in the Green Cross Clinic Veterianaria Moron. Through him we ask you if you can you an injection to cover the cost for recovery. ADAM's economic situation is not good right now and need help from you all to this case. You can also discuss the situation with family and friends, we need all the help possible if you think you can do something to improve the situation of Lazarus and many animals ... Join WE @ s! Be soci @, sponsor or godmother ... to volunteer, make a donation sporadically or regularly ... Contact us and we will explain how you can help, how can you help Lazarus. Every time we have less soci 's due to the crisis, and we have outstanding invoices mainly at the vet. Thanks to all of you s .. Champion Cheer! Ideally, find shelter or final adoption for when you leave the clinic to not return to shelter. Many thanks to all.

Sorry about the english translation- it was translated by google!  It must have been terrifying for the folk there too, one girl was sobbing and sobbing, I can understand why now.  I am sure we will keep Ratón/Poppet/Lazarus   providing all the animals get on ok.

Jim says we can´t have another dog though!  (after we keep Ratón/Poppet/Lazarus or whatever we end up calling him)

Natalia went to the vet to see our poorly Ratón/Poppet/Lazaro (depending who you are) and the vet said he could not sleep for worrying about the dog, so as he lives ´above the shop´ he went down to check at 4.30am and much to his surprise the dog was standing up  :D
He  is sleepy though (the dog and probably the vet too after a bad nights sleep ) the vet said it is the morphine based medicine he is on (the dog hopefully and not the vet  )  We might be ablt to bring him home tomorrow- we will see how he is.

It was maybe for the best, who knows what sort of problems he might have had trauma wise?   It would have been terrible if he had turned from a happy dog to a terrified dog.  At least he was on medication for the pain, and the vet cared enough to watch him during the night.

We took in a cat that lived less than 24 hours after we got  him, we named him Elmo, the greatest comfort was that he died being loved, cared for and with a name, I think the same applies here.
